He did not return to Russia after 1921. He initially moved to Finland and later lived in France. Cosmopolitan Paris, with its significant Russian émigré population, became his base, and ultimately, the city of his death on 12 April 1938. He was renowned for his larger-than-life carousing during this period, but he never sacrificed his dedication to his art. Chaliapin's attachment to Paris did not prevent him from pursuing an international operatic and concert career in England, the United States, and further afield.

Alberto Santos-Dumont

The Brazilian aviation pioneer, Alberto Santos-Dumont, was born 20 July 1873. The heir of a French who got rich as a coffee producers, Santos Dumont dedicated himself to science studies in Paris, France, where he spent most of his adult life. He designed, built, and flew some of the first practical dirigibles, demonstrating that routine, controlled flight was possible. This "conquest of the air", in particular his winning the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize on October 19, 1901 on a flight that rounded the Eiffel Tower, made him one of the most famous people in the world during the early 20th century. Santos-Dumont is considered to be the "Father of Aviation" in Brazil, his native country. He occupied the 38th chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, from 1931 until his death in 1932.
