Richard Wagner (22 May 1813 – 13 February 1883) was a German composer, conductor, and theatre director, who made several stays in Paris, as three plaques remind the passer-by.

He is  primarily known for his operas (or "music dramas", as he later called them). Wagner's compositions, particularly those of his later period, are notable for their complex texture, rich harmonies and orchestration, and the elaborate use of leitmotifs: musical themes associated with individual characters, places, ideas or plot elements.

Winnaretta Singer, princesse de Polignac, was born today in 1865

Winnaretta Singer, Princesse Edmond de Polignac (Yonkers, NY, 8 January 1865 – London, UK, 26 November 1943) was an American musical patron and heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune.
Her mother, Parisian-born Isabella Boyer, was possibly the model for Bartholdi's Statue of Liberty. After the outbreak of American Civil War, the Singer family moved to Paris, where they remained until the Franco-Prussian War.
In 1894 the Prince and Princesse de Polignac established a salon in Paris in the music room of their mansion on Avenue Henri-Martin (today, Avenue Georges-Mandel). The Polignac salon came to be known as a haven for avant-garde music. First performances of Chabrier, d'Indy, Debussy, Fauré, and Ravel took place in the Polignac salon. The young Ravel dedicated his piano work, Pavane pour une infante défunte, to the Princesse de Polignac. Many of Marcel Proust's evocations of salon culture were born during his attendance at concerts in the Polignac drawing room.

Mucha moved to Paris in 1887, and continued his studies at Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi. In addition to his studies, he worked at producing magazine and advertising illustrations. About Christmas 1894, Mucha happened to go into a print shop where there was a sudden and unexpected need for a new advertising poster for a play featuring Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress in Paris, at the Théâtre de la Renaissance on the Boulevard Saint-Martin. Mucha volunteered to produce a lithographed poster within two weeks, and on 1 January 1895, the advertisement for the play Gismonda by Victorien Sardou was posted in the city, where it attracted much attention. Bernhardt was so satisfied with the success of this first poster that she began a six-year contract with Mucha.

16-17 July 1942: Rafle du Vel d'Hiv, Thousands are arrested, to be later deported and murdered in Auschwitz

The Vel' d'Hiv Roundup (Rafle du vélodrome d'hiver), was a Nazi directed raid and mass arrest of Jews in Paris by the French police, on 16 and 17 July 1942. The roundup was one of several aimed at reducing the Jewish population in Occupied France. According to records of the Préfecture de Police, 13,152 victims were arrested, including more than 4,000 children. They were held at the Vélodrome d'Hiver (winter velodrome) in extremely crowded conditions, almost without water, food and sanitary facilities, as well as internment camps, then shipped by railway transports to Auschwitz for their mass murder. French President Jacques Chirac apologized in 1995 for the complicit role that French policemen and civil servants served in the raid.

Pisarro, father of Impressionism, was born today in 1830

Camille Pissarro (10 July 1830 – 13 November 1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas (now in the US Virgin Islands, but then in the Danish West Indies). His importance resides in his contributions to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Pissarro studied from great forerunners, including Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He later studied and worked alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac when he took on the Neo-Impressionist style at the age of 54.

Jacques de Molay, last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, was burned today in 1314.

Jacques de Molay (c. 1243 – 18 March 1314) was the 23rd and last Grand Master of the Knights Templar. Little is known of his actual life and deeds except for his last years as Grand Master. King Philip IV of France, deeply in debt to the Templars, had De Molay and many other French Templars arrested in 1307 and tortured into making false confessions. When De Molay later retracted his confession, Philip had him burned upon a scaffold on an island in the River Seine in Paris, in March 1314.
